In many cases, the first meaningful view of an airport customer journey arrives surprisingly late.

By the time a passenger drives onto the premises, they may have booked their flight weeks ago, decided how they’re getting to the airport and already paid for parking through a third party. Those decisions have shaped when they’ll arrive, what part of the parking estate they’ll use and how much they’re prepared to spend, yet very little of that context necessarily reaches the airport systems responsible for managing what happens next.

So when an ANPR camera finally captures the vehicle, the airport sees the arrival without always understanding the journey behind it.

That creates an unusual position for operators. They can have detailed visibility of what customers do once they reach the parking estate while knowing relatively little about the decisions that brought them there.

Some of that information will always remain outside the airport’s control. Airline and OTA (online travel agencies) relationships aren’t suddenly going to open up simply because a more complete customer view would be useful.

But that isn’t really the problem.

The bigger gap is between the information airports can realistically access and how much of it their platforms are capable of connecting today. Pre-booking records, third-party parking feeds and vehicle events already provide considerably more context than an isolated ANPR read.

For many airports, the commercial opportunity starts with joining those events together.

The airport customer journey starts long before arrival

Travel planning is fragmented by design.

The passenger might discover a flight through a search engine before booking through an OTA. Parking could be researched through an aggregator and purchased without the customer ever visiting an airport-owned channel. Directions come from a navigation app, while other transport arrangements may involve another third party entirely.

Each interaction helps shape what happens when that person eventually arrives at the airport, even though the airport itself may not be involved.

That matters operationally because these aren't abstract marketing touchpoints. They're decisions about when passengers are likely to arrive, which parts of the estate they intend to use and what they have already paid for.

Yet much of that context remains distributed between businesses that each understand their own part of the journey.

The airport eventually sees the outcome. A vehicle arrives at a car park. Another enters a pick-up or drop-off area. A booking reference is presented somewhere in the process.

What it doesn't necessarily see is how those events relate to everything that happened beforehand.

That fragmentation isn't evidence that something has gone wrong. It's simply how modern travel is bought. The problem begins when airport systems treat that fragmentation as a reason not to connect the parts they can see.

Arriving late has an operational and commercial cost

The most immediate consequence is visibility.

If the airport only understands demand when vehicles begin arriving on site, its view of that demand is necessarily reactive. Pre-booking information might exist elsewhere, while third-party parking activity may only become visible once a vehicle interacts with airport infrastructure.

The same fragmentation affects the customer record. A passenger can have a valid parking reservation and still arrive anonymous because the booking record and the vehicle event haven't been connected. 

The airport knows somebody purchased parking and knows that a particular registration has arrived, but unless those events contribute to the same view, it still has to establish the relationship between them.

When records remain separated by channel or system, operators end up with detailed information about individual transactions without necessarily understanding the customer behaviour underneath them.

Third-party sales add another commercial dimension. Aggregators provide reach and convenience, and they are a permanent part of how many passengers research and buy parking. 

But they also place another business between the airport and the customer. If the airport can't connect the resulting booking and vehicle activity back into its own operational view, it risks understanding less about a customer using its own estate than the intermediary that sold the booking.

That matters over time. Without a connected view, repeat customers continue to appear as individual transactions and valuable behaviour is harder to identify across channels.

Some of the journey will always remain out of reach

There is an obvious limit to how far airports can close this gap.

An airline isn't going to expose everything it knows about a passenger simply because that information might improve the airport's operational picture. OTAs have their own customer relationships and commercial incentives, while search and navigation platforms control interactions that airports cannot realistically expect to own.

A credible airport data strategy has to start by accepting that. The objective isn't to create a mythical single customer journey containing every search, booking decision and travel interaction from the moment somebody starts planning a trip. It's to make much better use of the events the airport can legitimately access.

That distinction matters because waiting for a complete customer view creates an impossible standard. There will always be gaps. What matters commercially is how much context can be created from the information that already sits within the airport's reach.

For many operators, there is still a substantial distance between that achievable view and what their systems currently provide.

Closing the gap with the data already in reach

Airports already generate or receive useful signals well before a passenger reaches the terminal.

Pre-booking engines know that future demand exists. Aggregator feeds can provide information about bookings made through third parties. Parking systems record activity across the estate, while ANPR creates a vehicle event when the customer physically arrives. Where account or loyalty information exists, that can add further context to an established relationship.

The challenge is that these events are often treated as belonging to the system that generated them. A booking sits in the booking platform, the vehicle read belongs to the parking system, and a third-party transaction remains associated with the aggregator feed.

Connecting them changes what the airport knows. A vehicle arriving on site no longer has to be interpreted as an isolated registration if the platform can recognise that it belongs to a booking already made. Future parking demand becomes visible before the day of travel rather than appearing only when vehicles arrive, while repeat activity can begin to form a useful customer history instead of disappearing into separate transactional records.

This is also where developments such as barrierless parking become more significant than simply removing physical infrastructure. As we explored in this post, once the operation can identify a vehicle and apply the right context without requiring it to stop, the customer journey and the operational record can move much closer together.

The important capability is not ownership of every system involved. It's the ability to consume useful events regardless of where they originated and connect them around the customer or vehicle the airport actually sees.

That allows the airport to arrive earlier in the relationship without pretending it can control everything that came before.

The opportunity is in the gap

Fragmentation across the airport customer journey is not going away.

Passengers will continue booking flights through third parties, comparing parking away from airport-owned channels and using services that sit outside the airport's direct control. Trying to own every one of those interactions isn't realistic.

Accepting the current level of fragmentation is a different matter. There is already information available through pre-booking, parking activity, vehicle recognition and third-party relationships that many airports aren't connecting effectively. The events exist, but the architecture underneath them often leaves each system understanding only its own part of the journey.

Operators that change that don't suddenly gain a complete view of the passenger. They gain something more useful: a much better view than they had before, built from information they can actually access and act on.

That creates earlier visibility of demand and a stronger understanding of how customers interact with the airport over time. More importantly, it gives operators a platform that can keep absorbing new events as more of the journey becomes visible.

The airport may never be there when the journey begins. But it doesn't need to wait until the vehicle arrives to start understanding it.
